Sunday 6 September – Doolin to Doonbeg

A no-rush start and the carpark was still half full, we're guessing they belong to residents of the islands, but it wasn't long before it filled up again. Another wet night, mainly drizzle, but at least it wasn't cold although it did improve a little during the day to the point that we actually saw some blue sky!

Being Sunday we had our usual Full English breakfast then once cleared up we set off back onto the Wild Atlantic Way to see what we could see. But everywhere was crowded, very obviously the Irish were again out in force to get a break from lockdown on the last weekend before the schools returned. Of course, just like we've seen in the UK, no thought given to protecting themselves from infection with zero social distancing and very little evidence of face masks – stupid, thank goodness we were isolated in the vans and not forced to be among them.

All the carparks at the various WAW viewpoints were full, never mind the height barriers, so that trying to find large enough spaces for us was impossible. So, a change of plan was called for and we decided that a couple of nights on a campsite to allow the crowds to go home and also let us do a few domestics was a great idea. We'd seen signs for Strandcamping at Doonbeg and as it was on our route thought we'd have a look. Glad we did because we found a lovely small site, only around 25 pitches, level and properly laid out with all facilities, owned and run by an English (Funsters would you believe) couple who had built it 6 years ago. Plenty of room, although they did say it was the first night for a while that they hadn't put out the “site full” signs, so we selected two nice pitches and settled in. We felt that €25 per night including 16 amp hookup wasn't expensive for Ireland especially as there was free showers and a fast wifi connection.

Straight away Bren and Tina took advantage of the laundry facilities, not that we needed to but it was just convenient to stay ahead of the game. The beach was just across the road so we took the dogs for a walk but it was a bit stony with lots of seaweed, not the best we've been on. The village was about 20 mins walk back up the road – we might check it out tomorrow but we have no urgent needs, so spent the rest of the day just relaxing.

And the sun came out!
